Report of the DA Secretary Year to 30 September 2010

Today is the first anniversary of Dave Galle’s terrible accident and I am sure we all wish him well in his recovery.

There was fairly good support over the last year for many DA and Section Events.

There were 6 DA Events this year. The first on the 11 April was the Freewheel Competition which was well supported with 20 taking part.

The second event was the I Spy Competition on 16 May with 14 taking part.

The Wiggonholt Ride on the 6th June only attracted 9 participants.

19 members from all Sections met at Wisborough Green for the Two Weald Ride on 4 July.

There was the usual excellent organisation from Horsham Section and the day was pleasant and sunny without being over warm.

On another good day on the 1 August 17 attended the D.A picnic at Wiggonholt.

On a sunny and warm day on the 12 September 12 attended on the Arun Crossings Ride.

In the DA Events Points Competition for the best Section Arun Adur won the Cup for the second year running. Best individual was initially a tie between Richard Boulton and John Wickens. The tiebreak is decided by the Rider who has attended the most of any part of any DA Groups Sunday Rides during the period covered by the DA Events, i.e. from 11 April to 12 September. Richard came out the winner. There was another tie for Best Lady between Anne Kelly and Gill Threadingham. Gill won on the tiebreak.

The winner of the new Phil Turner Memorial Trophy for attendance on all Sunday Rides in the DA from 11th April to 12th September was Edwin Jones with 20 attendances. Richard Boulton was 2nd with 17 and Colin Bloomfield 3rd with 16.

Overall my feeling is that the DA Events were again well supported this year.

There were 4 DA Committee Meetings during the year. With most events organised through the Sections the main activity of the DA was publication of the Pedaller magazine and the all Sections Rides Lists. Over the last year I think the Pedaller has maintained a high standard of interesting Articles.

Special thanks are due to John Turner for stepping in after Dave’s accident to keep the Pedaller going. Also special thanks to Dave for returning to edit the Pedaller early this year despite his problems.

DA Events for next year will be discussed further later on the Agenda but will probably be similar to this year.

A reminder that you can find the DA website at

www.ctcwestsussex.org.uk there are links on it to the Section Websites.

The objective of this is to deal with DA matters and serve as an introduction to the area with links to the various Section web sites. The web site includes the DA Runs List, Section and DA contacts, details about the Pedaller and DA Events including the latest Points table. Also the Minutes of last year’s AGM and the draft Agenda for this year have been available to look at on the Website for many months. You can also check out the Minutes of DA Committee meetings for the latest news. Note that you can download a complete copy of the DA Rides List from the Website if you need a spare Rides List.

As the nights draw in it is a good time to look forward to a varied selection of Rides and Events for next year and hopefully a good summer.

Report of the DA Treasurer

This year has seen a change in the reporting procedure for both West Sussex CTC and the 3 member groups. Each section treasurer has been sent forms to complete and return to HQ instead of their figures being included in the West Sussex CTC annual return. This change caused considerable confusion amongst all of us treasurers, not least because HQ did not put the correct figures from the previous year on the forms sent. Apparently they have a new Finance Manager-who hopefully by next year will be more familiar with the set up adopted within West Sussex CTC

.
As far as the figures for the Pedaller are concerned it is encouraging that we have been able to cover the production and distribution costs, despite an increase in the printers charge, with a gain of some 10p! The grant from CTC is slightly less than last year at £162, however overall income has exceeded expenditure by £7.68 resulting in a carried forward total balance of £489.75 at the end of the financial year. It has not been necessary to draw on any of our reserves in the savings account this year.
I would like to say a particular thank you to Peter and Bob for their help with the distribution of the Pedaller to advertisers, which helps share what would otherwise be a considerable burden.

John Wickens
West Sussex CTC hon. treasurer

Horsham and Crawley

Membership for this year is 20. The average number on our rides is 4 to 5 but statistics show a hard core of about 8 riders and 5 leaders.

This year we did our usual two events, the I-spy ride and the 2-Weald ride, both of which were well attended. I for one was relieved that the weather was fairly calm for the 2-weald ride and we didn't have to do battle with the gazebo. We have discussed moving to another side of the green to avoid the cricket balls next year, but we shan't do it without letting you all know. I'd like to thank you all for your continuing support of these two events as a lot of effort goes into staging them.

Mick Vertue and John Veitch did us proud on this year's anniversary weekend. They found us a lovely hotel in Tenterden at about 45 miles distant from Horsham and Crawley. We all agreed that although the ride was quite tough the route was beautiful and of course once we arrived and got warm it was all worthwhile.

This year's Christmas lunch will be at the Gate in Ifield again. The Mick Horley award will be presented to Bob Moore for attending and leading the most rides.

This year's rides included the legendary Crawley 100 and Pete Smith's seaside ride. Pete has also continued to campaign hard in Crawley for better cycling facilities and he worked with the council and other cycling groups to organise a family ride to Nyman's Gardens back in the summer. Some of our members also did an overnight ride from London to Bognor.

The blog continues, providing a full run down of each week, with photographs and exact descriptions of the routes.

At this year's Horsham and Crawley AGM Bob Moore volunteered to take over the role of runs secretary from John Veitch. Thanks to John from all of us for doing a great job and thanks Bob for taking over. Pete Eyre will continue as treasurer and I shall continue as Secretary.

Barbara Nicol

A two minutes silence was observed for Armistice Day commemoration.

Arun Adur

The Arun Adur CTC consists of 37 members and enjoys the company of visitors from other sections, unattached CTC members and non-members.

Tony Nichols, our Chairman, organised the Tuesday's programme and managed to put together a wide range of rides to various destinations and types of riding. Some of the rides were on the level, some were definitely not on the level, most were on the Sussex lanes but some were on tracks and even off road cycling. The members are starting at different places and finishing at different places. Some members start cycling from home regardless of the starting point and this can add over 50 miles to the days ride. As the clock went forward so did the numbers of cyclists. The rides varied enormously from the gentle potter to the tougher rides into the complicated lanes of the Hampshire hills.  The Tuesday rides also included some off road routes and those who were cycling on what looked like inner tubes would go on the road and meet the others at the end of the track.

Sunday rides are organised by committee member Richard Boulton and continue with varying numbers but tend to be the same few tough cyclists that look for challenges; however, this was beginning to change with some members cycling to the coffee stop and then returning home.  There were up to 8 cyclists on Sundays

Richard Boulton organised the Saturday off road rides during the summer months where there were up to five cyclists.

In the Spring Tony Nichols started Saturday easy rides.  He and was supported by an average of six people, and so these must be regarded as a success.  They were generally along level ground and so brought out some new faces and cyclists who liked the gentle cycling between tea stops.

Our members have had some very interesting rides including Richard and Dave in Corsica; some Trips to Normandy; and Tony Yorke and Graham cycling with Veteran bikes in Belgium and the UK.  Ivan did a five-day lone trip down the Danube.  It did not stop raining and the river flooded.  He took off his wet gear in the evening and put on wet clothes in the morning!  Definitely an experience rather than a holiday.  Other members went to Spain and France

Another social event was Tony Yorke went to see the Queen at Buckingham Palace to receive the OBE for his services to cycling.

Social events

The section held it annual lunch at The De Brock Suite, Lancing Manor Leisure Centre.  It was a sunny day and several members cycled to the restaurant.  The room was large and private and twenty of us enjoyed the lunch and the company.  There was one obvious person missing, Dave Galle, but Louise was able to tell us of Dave's progress and his continuing positive attitude.  We always knew he did a lot for the CTC but it was only when he was not available that we really appreciated all his work.  Dave Fox organised the Dave Galle collection and a total of £960 was collected.

The monthly Wednesday meetings have been organised to have alternate meetings at the Ferring Village Hall.  At the February Tuesday evening club night Tony showed the Jacques Tati film "Jour de fête".  It was a film on a CD that was improved from the original that I saw 50 years ago by being in colour and a much clearer version than the out of focus brown and grey of the original.  The subject was a postman on a bike in a French village that was filmed only a couple of years after the war.  It was a wonderful film.

Several meetings were arranged to see digital slides, but as the digital projector was not listening to the computer, real slides and a film were shown.  It is hoped the two contraptions will now talk to one another and a normal programme will be held in 2011.  However, we did see slides of Italy from Dave Fox and of Malta and Gozo by Tony Nichols.  I still have some slides by other members and look forward to showing them in the New Year.

On the “other” months, there were meetings in The Gun in Findon where it was arranged that we could cycle or go by car.  These meetings were not a great success; however, the Monthly Munch continues to be held at Macmillan's in Worthing and is successful.

The web site, http://www.fonant.co.uk/arunadur/, continues to be organised by Dave Galle and he is still managing to organise the Pedaller.  During the initial period of his recovery, John Turner acted as editor much to the relief of the other members of the committee.

The 2009-2010 committee was re-elected un-apposed for the next year.

I would like to thank all those that helped me directly as secretary including Tony Nichols, the chairman, Richard Boulton, the treasurer, Ivan Mills and Ernie Yerrell and for John Wickens acting as auditor.  Thank you Dave Galle, John Maxim and Edwin Jones for reminding me of the things I should be doing.  I would also like to thank the rides leaders for organising such interesting routes, and to participants that make up the group and encourage others at all levels and generally make the rides more interesting physically, visually and socially.  Lastly would also like to thank all those people that waited for me at the tops of the hills.

Bognor/Chichester Secretary’s Report

Membership including couples this year is slightly down at 67 compared with 72 last year.

Numbers out on rides has varied but has generally been good. Average numbers out on a Sundays was about 7. Wednesdays was about 5-7 on average. As last year we have had a good number of ladies on the Sunday Rides. Numbers out on evening rides have been similar to last year from Felpham. The new system for the Chichester Evening Rides with members converging on a member’s house for coffee and biscuits proved a success with good numbers on some nights. We plan to repeat this next summer.

There was good support for various special Sunday Rides including the Langstone Harbour Circuit Ride with 12 taking part and Avryl’s ever popular Strawberry Tea Ride with 19 attending.

In the points for the attendance at all DA Events in the competition among the Sections this year we were second by a short nose to Arun Adur. We were much improved over 2009 when we were last. However Gill Threadingham from our Section won the ladies Cup.

For 2 weeks starting late September I organised a Club Holiday in Greece to the large Island of Lesvos near Turkey with 10 attending. This was moving on with several locations staying 2 nights. Weather was good and scenery excellent although with more hills to climb than some members anticipated.

I am not planning any week or 2 week Club Trips for next year.

There were many successful social events including Club Nights, the Skittles Evening which was last night and had 27 attending. There was also in the summer the popular Barbecue hosted by Mary Turner.

Social events to look forward to this year are the Club Night on the 9th December when Martin from City Cycles will be with us to demonstrate Wheel Building. There will be 3 more Club Nights next year. On Sunday 5 December we hold our Christmas lunch at the new venue of The Old Stables, Fontwell. The Mince Pie Ride is on the 9th January. On 13 January there will be a Games Night with Mary Turner.

Right to Ride Representative

There being no formally appointed person, Peter Smith gave an unscripted report.

The West Sussex Cycle Forum has been very effective in scrutinising the LTP 3 (local transport plan) such that WSCC (West Sussex County Council) will use the forum plan in preference to the council’s original document.

Simone Makepiece, West Sussex Cycling officer, had been very productive in getting improvements to cycling in Crawley.

A family ride to be organised in conjunction with the Crawley borough council during Bike Week.

John Wickens asked whether the cycling budget of WSCC would be affected by national budget cuts. Peter replied that WSCC allocated less than £100,000 per year to cycling but used Section 106 monies (collected from developers as a social contribution). In practice WSCC found it difficult to spend all of the money. No money has been spent at Crawley.

Sarah Troke said the Cycle England would be abolished in March 2011. The questions were:

  • “What funding would there be for Sustainable Transport for 2012”
  • “What interim funding will there be to bridge April 2010 to March 2011”

Pedaller Magazine

Dave Galle thanked contributors for the number of articles, such that he is carrying over articles but to not let the stream dry up. He also thanked John Turner for stepping in whilst he was incapacitated.

He was pleased the magazine was running at a financial surplus.

Baker Street Cycles are still using the original advertisement for bike models they no longer supply. Attempts to date have failed upgrade the advert. This advertiser may be lost.

A full-page advert costs £13, a half page £7.00.

New cycles shops and cafes should be offered a copy of the Pedaller to encourage them to advertise. All main libraries should also be supplied with a copy.

Any other business

Sarah Troke is a CTC officer employed to develop “Bike Club” for 10 –20 year olds. “Bike club” has 14 officers who can help and supply funds e.g. for bikes, CRB (criminal record checks) etc to encourage involvement in cycling by the target audience. Rose Wickford the local “Bike Club” officer, based in Brighton and Hove, will also be covering West Sussex from January. It is hoped that Rose will be invited to talk to the groups.

Richard Bates is pursuing the idea of a mid Sussex CTC group (East and West Sussex), as existing groups are some distances from Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill.

The financial accounting procedure is being reviewed by HQ, as is the naming of the groups.

East Sussex has a Wednesday Rider group that regularly rides with 40 or more riders. The organisation is informal with an agreed 11’s meet point, joint ride to a lunch stop and disperse.

Keith Dodman asked members to support “World Car Free Day” on 22 September 2011.

Arthur Smith invited members to the Bognor Chichester group club night on 9 December 2010 at St Ninian’s Hall, Pagham to hear a talk on Wheel Building by Martin Guanaccio from City Cycles.

The meeting closed at 12.00 am.
